Fibromyalgia and the Inner Workings of the Nervous System

Widespread pain, trouble sleeping, memory loss, and extreme tiredness are some of the debilitating symptoms many who suffer from fibromyalgia experience on a daily basis. Researchers have found it challenging to pinpoint the root cause of the condition. This can make diagnosis and treatment difficult as well. Here is what they have found to be true and a way to help those who have the condition find effective relief.

What studies have revealed is that the symptoms can present suddenly. At times it can occur after trauma, an infection, or with stress. They have also noted a degree of what is called dysautonomia, or a dysfunction in the autonomic nervous system. This system has two main branches, the parasympathetic and the sympathetic. Both branches are necessary as they complement each other. The sympathetic system controls the fight or flight response while the parasympathetic is responsible for the rest and digest response. Both systems are affected when a person has fibromyalgia. These systems are housed in the brain and throughout the spinal cord.

Often, a blockage or obstruction in the communication pathways of these systems can lead to a host of conditions. One of these is fibromyalgia. One way in particular that this could happen is through the misalignment of the C1 and C2 vertebrae. These bones are located just below the brainstem where nerves and other networks meet. When the bones are out of place, they can strain these delicate structures and cause system wide issues to develop.

Through precise measurements and gentle adjustments, realignment of the upper cervical vertebrae can relieve stress on these pathways. The result is a healing to the autonomic nervous system. Many who see an upper cervical chiropractor for treatment of fibromyalgia have experienced lasting, natural, and effective relief from their symptoms. Restoring quality of life and health back to those who suffer from such issues is part of what we do here at N8 Upper Cervical Chiropractic.
