3 Types of Food to Avoid if You Get Vertigo

Vertigo is a false sensation of movement that often presents as a feeling that the room is spinning. For others, the room may seem to tilt or sway as though one were on a boat. Most cases of vertigo are considered peripheral – having the inner ear as the source of the problem. Occasionally, vertigo may be central or related to the function of the central nervous system. For peripheral vertigo, dietary changes are often recommended. Here are three types of food to avoid if you get vertigo. We’ll also address another natural way to find relief.

Vertigo Diet – Avoiding Foods that Are High in Sodium

Salt helps to regulate the amount of fluids that the body retains. Since vertigo often goes back to an abundance of fluid in the inner ear, reducing sodium intake is important to reducing the frequency of attacks. Besides avoiding the salt shaker, you also should watch out for foods that start out high in sodium. Some of the worst culprits include potato chips, canned soups, microwave dinners, and fast food. For example, a Big Mac has nearly 1,000 mg of sodium, and that’s if you don’t have any fries.

Vertigo Diet – Avoiding Foods Rich in Tyramine

Tyramine is an amino acid, but it is also known as a common migraine trigger. If your vertigo is associated with migraines, such as is the case with vestibular migraines, this is a food group to stay away from. It mostly consists of aged cheeses and meats such as pepperoni, salami, smoked sausage, mozzarella, swiss, provolone, and the like. It seems like pizza toppings are basically the recipe for migraine-triggered vertigo.

Vertigo Diet – Avoiding Foods High in Sugar

Sugar can also mess with the balance of fluids in the body, so once again, the inner ear is affected. What are the most commonly consumed sugary substances? You may love dessert, but most people actually take in more sugars through beverages like soda, sports drinks, energy drinks, and sweetened fruit juice or tea.

An Alternative to Dieting for Vertigo

If you just read that you have to quit everything you love to eat, the bad news is that most of the foods and drinks noted above are pretty bad for you even if you don’t have vertigo. The good news is that there may be a faster way to reduce the severity and frequency of attacks.
